Blossom Educational Therapy LLC

Executive Functioning Skills are brain based skills that help us navigate through our daily tasks from getting out of bed, starting on a project, meeting a deadline. One of the executive functioning skill that we will be focusing on is Flexibility.

What is Flexibility?

Flexibility is the ability to switch between tasks and demands in response to changes. It is also being able to adapt to setbacks or obstacles and revise and plan change.

Why is Flexibility Important?

Flexibility is important because it helps us switch from one task to another. It helps with understanding that if a method is not working, it's time to approach it differently and not stay stuck on the first method. Flexibility also supports with adjusting to changes in schedule or changes in the environment. Academically, it helps switching between activities and improves reading abilities.

Tips to promote Flexibility

The first thing is NOT to PANIC! Flexibility can improve with the appropriate and explicitly taught to students. Here are some tips you can use at home:

  • rearrange furniture in the home/ have your learner participate with you on this and adapt

  • play charades-your child is learning to consistently adapt

  • MODEL- as adults, we understand that sometimes plans do not go as plan, model by thinking aloud to your learner as you demonstrate how you handle a change of schedule
